| The Shelbys, a four-piece band from the piedmont area of North
Carolina, play a range of material from American musical traditions
that draws from sources in pre-war country, blues, gospel, and rhythm & blues classics from the 40s and 50s. The
Shelbys came together after three of the members, Chip Shelby, LaNelle
Davis and John Worthington performed in the stage band for the
musical, "Good Ole' Girls. Chip, LaNelle and John had the pleasure
of working with writers, Lee Smith, Jill McCorkle and singer/
songwriters, Marshall Chapman and Matraca Berg during the development
of the original production. Each of the band members has 20 - 30
years experience in a variety of musical styles including bluegrass,
rock & roll, blues, and old-time country. A highlight of The
Shelbys is the vocal abilities of each of the members which results
in exciting duets, trios and quartettes. Band members are: LaNelle
Davis -string bass, Virginia Ryan - acoustic guitar, Chip Shelby -
drums and John Worthington - guitar, mandolin. The band's renditions of classics by artists
such as Memphis Minnie, George Jones, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Hank
Williams, and Jimmy Reed assure that listeners and dancers have an
exciting honky-tonk, barrel-house experience. |
